Upon stepping into Cuscatlan, you’re greeted by a cozy, vibrant setting that perfectly complements the bold flavors of the dishes on the menu. The restaurant serves up authentic Salvadorian specialties, making it a must-visit for food lovers looking to explore the rich culinary culture of El Salvador.

One of the standout dishes on the menu is the pupusas. These thick, hand-made corn tortillas are stuffed with fillings like cheese, beans, or pork, and then cooked to perfection. The best part? The pupusas come with a side of curtido, a tangy cabbage slaw that adds the perfect crunch and balance to the meal. Each bite of this dish is a burst of flavor that truly highlights the authenticity of Salvadorian cuisine.

For those with a bigger appetite, the baleadas are a crowd favorite. This dish features a soft flour tortilla filled with refried beans, cheese, and cream-simple, but utterly satisfying. It’s a hearty meal that you’ll find yourself coming back for time and time again.

What makes Cuscatlan stand out is not just the food, but the dedication to offering an authentic experience. The staff here truly knows their craft, always happy to explain the different menu options and offer recommendations based on your preferences. Besides the well-loved traditional options, Cuscatlan also offers a variety of grilled meats, tamales, and yuca con chicharrón (fried cassava with pork), all of which are prepared with care and authenticity. Whether you’re in the mood for something light or looking to indulge in a more substantial meal, you’ll find something to satisfy your cravings.

The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, high-quality ingredients, which you can taste in every bite. The flavors are rich and vibrant, just like the culture behind the food. Whether you’re a first-timer or a regular, you can always count on Cuscatlan to provide an exceptional dining experience that captures the heart and soul of Salvadorian cuisine.

When it comes to beverages, Cuscatlan doesn’t disappoint either. The horchata, a sweet, cinnamon-infused rice drink, pairs perfectly with any dish, while the Jamaica (hibiscus tea) offers a refreshing contrast to the savory flavors of the food. Don’t forget to try their fresh fruit juices, which are a great way to cool down, especially on warmer days.

  • When we get the itch for Papusas this is one of our go-to places. The food is really tasty and good prices. We love the fried plantains with beans and sour cream and the papusas (revueltas and chorizo are solid). Staff is always really friendly and helpful. The dining room is OK, but for a quick bite it’s fine. It’s a nice location and we’re happy to see more cool shops pop up on Grand.

  • 10 out of 10 go now! First time at this location, so we decided to try a lot of things. We were greeted by Jessica she was real professional and nice. Came throughout to check on us, and the food to go was packed nicely. Aside from taking some to go, we ate there. Atole: was perfect by my standards. I like hot and sweet, and it was just that. Reminded me of Farina from Puerto Rico but in a drink form. The sampler platter was perfect option to open up to what was coming. Carnitas were perfectly seasoned, crunchy but soft inside. If you eat carnitas you know that's how we want it. The yuca was well fried and went well with the coleslaw (cutido) and hot sauce. It came with a sweet elote tamal and a chicken tamal, both soft and flavorful. The sweet plantains were cooked perfectly, not burned or in burnt oil like some places. Went well with the cream. I ordered a chicken chipotle and cheese pupusa, and it was awesome! I don't even eat pupusas. Never really thought much of them, but I took 3 to go for later. My son ordered pepperoni and cheese pupusas and was in love at first bite. The fried fish was on point and came with a side of rice and salad, perfect for those looking for great taste and fewer calories. We will be coming back a lot even if the 78 is closed for repairs. Thank you.

  • I found this pupusería in Escondido by chance while passing through and picked up some pupusas to take home. My family loved them so much they said, “Next time, we’re going with you—we need to try them fresh!” So we went back, and it was even better in person. My wife is vegetarian and was really happy to see so many vegetarian options. For me, I love how generously stuffed the pupusas are—you can actually taste the beans, the cheese, and the carne asada. They don’t skimp on the filling, which I appreciate. Having grown up in Miami, I miss how abundant Central American food is out there. You don’t see it as often in Southern California, so this place really stands out. The flavors are authentic, the portions are solid, and it’s become one of our go-to spots now. Highly recommend!

  • Accessibility: no disabled parking outside, only street parking. Flat ground restaurant with seating inside and outside. Seating: The restaurant is cute inside, but packed, so there will be a wait for a table inside. There are a few tables outside, but it is cold at nighttime with no heaters out there. Food: the popusas were delicious! 100% would come back for the popusas. The spaghetti was good; they try to fool you with the tons of meatballs...when you mix your food, you will find they are not whole meatballs, but instead, ones cut in halves. Service: service was alright. The employees were nice, but they did not honor the "1 free popusa with Yelp check-in." The employee said she would ask the boss, then in front of us, did not do that and cleaned things instead. I would have just said no, but oh well. I do recommend they take that off their Yelp page if they don't plan to honor it. Languages spoken: Spanish and English. Price: good!

  • Amazing Salvadorian Food in Escondido! I had an incredible experience at Cuscatlan ’ in Escondido—truly the best Salvadorian food I’ve had in a long time! It’s hard to find good pupusas around San Diego, but this place does it right. The pupusas are my absolute favorite! I tried the spinach and cheese with added beans and the chicken and cheese—both were packed with flavor and generously portioned. Another highlight was their sweet plantains with beans and cream—such a delicious and authentic touch! The portions here are very generous, and everything I tried was flavorful and fresh. The service was also outstanding. April was my server, and she was so sweet and kind. All the staff were friendly, attentive, and super fast. I will definitely be back, especially for their lunch specials! Highly recommend this hidden gem in Escondido.

  • Good Salvadorean restaurant in the heart of Escondido! Met a friend here for dinner. There's construction in the area but it's going to be so nice when it's all finished. Parking was easy as it was an early dinner on a weekday. I ordered the Camarones Picoso. I warned it was spicy, but I hadn't expected it to have such a kick. It was really good even though my mouth was on fire at the end of the meal. Ha! Forgot what my friend ordered but she liked hers too. Their tortillas are thick and fluffy. It was really nice to dip them into the sauce from my dish. They are sort of bready. What they make the pupusas with, I think The restaurant was very quiet and clean. Our waitress was really friendly and took great care of us.

  • Delicious pupusas. Ordered to go. They add the cabbage and it is so good! Cozy dining area. Friendly wait staff. The order takes a while but is worth the wait.
